Math Reasoning Inventory addresses students’ numerical reasoning strategies and understandings—the basics that students need to be prepared for middle school math and algebra. This three-day course introduces the theory, structure, and focus of MRI through a hands-on exploration of the online tool. Participants will learn how to conduct interviews, analyze student explanations, interpret reports, and develop actionable instruction plans.Outcomes
Establish a solid foundation for the structure/focus of MRI and the CCSS mathematical content/practices
Conduct effective student interviews; record and report using the online tool
Learn how to analyze and use information about students’ whole-number, decimal, and fraction comprehension to develop effective instructional strategies that target gaps in understanding and reasoning
Explore the role of classroom discourse and the use of intentional language to improve student proficiency in math
Become familiar with appropriate reasoning strategies that all middle school students should understand
