Math Reasoning Inventory addresses students’ numerical reasoning strategies and understandings—the basics that students need to be prepared for middle school math and algebra. This three-day course introduces the theory, structure, and focus of MRI through a hands-on exploration of the online tool. Participants will learn how to conduct interviews, analyze student explanations, interpret reports, and develop actionable instruction plans.Outcomes

  • Establish a solid foundation for the structure/focus of MRI and the CCSS mathematical content/practices
  • Conduct effective student interviews; record and report using the online tool
  • Learn how to analyze and use information about students’ whole-number, decimal, and fraction comprehension to develop effective instructional strategies that target gaps in understanding and reasoning
  • Explore the role of classroom discourse and the use of intentional language to improve student proficiency in math
  • Become familiar with appropriate reasoning strategies that all middle school students should understand
