How do we best develop students’ flexibility with numbers and computational skills? Come investigate the role of number talks in the shift from telling students procedures to empowering students to think and reason. During this session, you will participate in number talks, analyze classroom video, and use mathematical relationships as you consider how to make number talks part of math instruction in your schools and classrooms.

*UPDATE: We regret that Sherry Parrish will no longer be able to attend Model Schools. Patty Clark will be speaking in her place during these session times.

Constructed and extended response items on state and benchmark assessments require students to think in ways that are not always part of daily practice in mathematics classrooms. This session provides you with the opportunity to experience a mathematical task and to consider the expectations and learning environment necessary to foster student success with writing for deeper learning of mathematics.

To prepare students with 21st century skills, a shift from teacher-led direct instruction to a student-centered classroom must be made. Instead of teachers modeling steps of a mathematical procedure, students engage in deep discourse, learning stations, rich problem-solving tasks, and small guided math groups. The Math Workshop model of instruction creates an environment where teachers are facilitators and students believe in themselves as mathematicians, expressing a growth mindset regarding math. Math Workshop focuses on differentiation, reaching the needs of all students while creating a learning environment that is possible for teachers to easily maintain. Participants in this session will learn WHY Math Workshop is a valuable vehicle for mathematics instruction and how to establish routines and procedures that will allow student choice, meaningful small group guided math, and engaging learning stations. You will gain a solid understanding of the different structures within Math Workshop, be able to recognize what Math Workshop can look like in a math blocking grades K-5, and know how to identify the processes and procedures necessary for successful implementation.
